Birmingham attracts record number of tourists

Birmingham attracted a record 944,000 tourists last year according to the latest figures from the Office for National Statistics.

The Second City and Manchester are the only two of the top 20 UK destinations to see the majority of overseas visitors come for business.

Consumer spend by foreign visitors to the city reached £300 million.

Birmingham held its position as the fourth most visited city in the UK for the seventh year running, with London at the top.

Events during 2015 may increase the total of visitors. They include the Rugby World Cup at Villa Park, the England v Australia Ashes Test Match at Edgbaston and the AEGON Classic tennis tournament at Edgbaston.

Last year was also a record for the number of visits to the UK by overseas residents at 34.4 million.

Overall spending by overseas residents in the UK last year also reached a record high of £21.8 billion.
