Wolves fans ordered to stay off pitch to avoid ruining potential play-off party

Wolves have ordered fans to stay off the pitch at Molineux on Saturday to avoid any potential play-off party being ruined.

The club said any pitch invasion will result in the cancellation of the full-time lap of honour and announcement of the nominations for the player of the season award.

A big crowd is expected as Wolves host Millwall still in with a chance of gatecrashing the Championship play-offs.

The Jack Harris and Stan Cullis stands have already sold out for what is scheduled to be the club's last game of the season. But a victory - combined with a defeat for Derby and a draw for Brentford - would propel Wolves into the play-offs and a potential multi-million pound payday with promotion to the riches of the Premier League

Bosses at Wolves will be desperate to avoid a repeat of ugly scenes witnessed at Molineux last season when fans stormed the pitch four times during the thrilling 6-4 win over Rotherham.

Pitch invasions can also lead to clubs being fined or, in extreme cases, docked points.

Head of marketing Matt Grayson said: "The message is simple: stay off the pitch.

"We don't like issuing warnings, however, a pitch incursion – celebratory or otherwise – has the potential to lead to injuries and damage to the pitch which would result in the cancellation of the players' lap of appreciation, which would be a huge shame for everyone.

"The Wolves support has been tremendous during this 46-game season and we want that to continue without any problems this coming Saturday.

"Our young squad have earned the right to enjoy that moment and Wolves fans have earned the right to share it with them.

"As always, we thank the fans in anticipation of their understanding and support."

Millwall, who were relegated to League One earlier this week and whose fans have historically had a reputation for violence, will bring 1,326 supporters up from London after selling out their allocation.

The Wolves warning comes just weeks after ugly scenes marred Aston Villa's FA Cup win over West Brom, with Baggies boss Tony Pulis labelling the pitch-invading fans 'mindless idiots'.

West Midlands Police will have a 'significant presence' at Saturday's match, which kicks off at 12.15pm.

And Wolves said every effort would be made to identify anyone who went onto the pitch. Banning orders are often dished out to people who do so.

West Midlands Police spokesman Billy Corrigan said: "The law in relation to encroaching on football pitches is clear.

"West Midlands Police work closely with clubs and supporters' associations to ensure that games can take place in a safe and secure environment."

If Wolves make the play-offs they are likely to have a home leg at Molineux next Friday night.
