Peter Hulland of Racecourse Drive, Bridgnorth, died of heart failure at Princess Royal Hospital on April 4, aged 87.

Mr Hulland volunteered as a firefighter from 1965 until 1983 eventually becoming lead fireman.

He worked an electrical engineer and safety officer at the former Decca factory and served with the Royal Signals during the Second World War.

He was also a keen photographer and would take pictures for newspapers, and at Christening and weddings.

His daughter Diane said: "He started when the fire station was at Northgate and he was still there when the base moved to Innage Lane where it is today.

"We used to have a bell in the house and when it went off I can remember it causing absolute chaos.

"Dad would dive out of the bedroom and into the car, which would have been left started on the drive by my late mother.

"The late Henley Jones, who was also a firefighter, lived across the road from us and he would leave in a rush too.

"They would both speed off down the road and then on to the fire.

"My father was very well known in the community but of course he was always just dad to me."

Mr Hulland's funeral was being held in SS Peter and Paul's Church in Tasley today, from 1.30pm, followed by cremation in Shrewsbury at 3.15pm.

It is family flowers only but donations will be taken for the Midland Air Ambulance and Fire Service Benevolent Fund.

Mr Hulland is survived by his daughter Diane, son-in-law Mervyn and grandson Ben.
