Match Commander, Chief Superintendent James Andronov, said police will be reviewing CCTV around the ground and in Birmingham city centre in a bid to identify those responsible - and push for prosecutions against offenders.

He added: "We had a strong police presence in and around the ground: our officers escorted a large group of fans identified as being a potential disorder risk away from the ground to their transport, while other officers were placed at strategic locations to monitor the situation and deter trouble.

"Today's game was comprehensively risk assessed over many weeks and intelligence monitored in order for us to determine the likelihood of disorder.

"But policing football matches is not an exact science...we cannot have officers everywhere at the ground and the surrounding area. There were a few pockets of disorder, four arrests were made and two people taken to hospital with head injuries.

"Some people have questioned the decision to allow both sets of fans to leave the ground at the same time. It is rare these days to hold back supporters - it's not been done at this fixture for several years - as evidence suggests to do so often increases tension and the prospect of trouble.

"As with all large operations we will review the policing of today's game."
