The team, armed with their bags and cup final suits, set off from the Banks's Stadium on Friday to prepare for the Johnstone's Paint Trophy final against Bristol City.

The players were in good spirits ahead of the club's first appearance at the national stadium.

They were waved off by youngsters with Saddlers flags as the excitement grows ahead of the clash.

Defender Andy Taylor brought along doughnuts for the journey, while James Chambers had a cushion round his neck in order to get a comfortable rest.

Manager Dean Smith was also in good spirits as he plotted victory over the West Country-based opposition, who are League One leaders and 14 places above the Saddlers in the table.

They will be backed by up to 30,000 supporters who have eagerly awaited Walsall's first trip to Wembley in their 127-year history.

The men who will be on the pitch trying to win the trophy are in buoyant mood ahead of the occasion.

Forward Romaine Sawyers said: "People can label us underdogs but we don't look at it and think Bristol are better than us.

"We have the belief we can go there and win. We have played them once this season and drawn 1-1 and I think we were unlucky not to win the game.

"I think we are deemed underdogs but we always manage to step up and be counted," he added.

"The games this season against the bigger teams, the Prestons, Sheffield Uniteds and Bristol themselves, we have shown we can compete against them.

"We don't see ourselves as underdogs even though others might."

Captain Adam Chambers added they are focussed on trying to bring back the cup.

"All of the other games are out of the way now and you can focus on it," he said.

"It is going to mean a lot to a lot of people, a momentous day in the club's history.

"We need to make sure we don't just go there for the day but go there to win.

"Obviously people are happy we're going to Wembley but just think how much happier they will be if we win." Cup fever has gripped the town, and the rest of the Midlands, with fans from clubs across the region getting behind the club.

Joining the Saddlers faithful will be supporters from teams such as Wolves, Albion and Villa roaring on the team.

Fans are also travelling from across the world to avoid missing out on one of the club's biggest-ever moments.

Walsall secured their place at Wembley after beating Preston North End over two legs in the semi-final.

The match against Bristol City will be the most attended football game in Britain this weekend. Drew Barrand, The Football League's marketing director, said: "The projected attendance number is compelling evidence this Sunday's Johnstone's Paint Trophy Final will be the biggest game of a very busy football weekend in the UK.

"The overwhelming response from fans to the opportunity to see their club play at Wembley in a major showpiece final is an indicator of the continued high levels of support that Football League competitions receive."

The Express & Star is urging people making the historic trip to Wembley to share their messages of support for the team.

Glossy posters saying 'Come On Saddlers', with a space for people to write their messages, are being given out.

Fans simply need to write down a good luck message for Dean Smith and the boys and hold it up for a picture.

Send your selfie to us and we will send £100 to the most creative 'Super Saddlers Selfie'.

Posters are available outside the station in Walsall town centre and also at Bescot Retail Park, where official club coaches are leaving, so bring a pen.
