Wolverhampton South West MP Paul Uppal reminded David Cameron of a campaign to get the go-ahead to rebuild the city's rail station, which is awaiting government approval.

Transport and council bosses in the West Midlands need permission to borrow around £20 million, having already secured £13.5 million of public money.

Labour MPs Emma Reynolds and Pat McFadden have also been writing to the government seeking backing, as has Wolverhampton City Council.

Mr Uppal said: "Just over a fortnight ago the Secretary of State for Transport visited Wolverhampton and reached the conclusion I have and that every resident in the city has, that the station is desperately in need of an upgrade. Locally Centro and developer Neptune have come up with an innovative project that is £80 million and 1,300 jobs.

"Will you use your offices to ensure Wolverhampton not only gets a station but we continue the industrial renaissance of the West Midlands.

Mr Cameron said: "Following the visit of the secretary of state there is £13.5m secured through the local transport and growth deal to fund this project.

It's essential that Wolverhampton benefits from good road, rail and infrastructure connections so it can benefit from the growth we are seeing in this country."
