Around a dozen firefighters tackled the blaze in Worcester Street, Stourbridge, at noon.

The homeowner, thought to be in his 60s, grabbed his dog and ran to safety. He was checked over by paramedics but did not need to go to hospital.

The blaze caused extensive damage to the terraced property. Firefighters now say they believe the fire may have been started deliberately.

Firefighter Malcolm Bourne said: "It has completely gutted the lounge.

"The fire started in the lounge. All the doors were open so there is a lot of smoke damage to the rest of the house.

"The man was already out with his dog."
