Drivers warned as thieves target defrosting cars in Wolverhampton and Walsall

Drivers are being warned after three cars were stolen from the Black Country this morning while their owners waited indoors for them to defrost.

All three vehicles were left unlocked on the owner's driveways after being left unlocked with their keys in the ignition.

At 8am thieves drove off in a Porsche Cayman from Dovedale Road, Wolverhampton, while twenty minutes later, a black Honda CRV was stolen from Yale Road, Willenhall. At 8.35am a Peugeot 208 was taken from Windsor Walk in Walsall.

Sergeant Andy Gregory said: "Owners think it's fine to nip inside the house to collect their bag or have a last sip of coffee - but it only takes a few seconds for someone to jump in and drive away. Always stay with your car as it defrosts and use de-icer spray or a scraper to speed up the process.

"We'd also like to remind people that insurance policies are often invalid when cars are stolen in this way as the owner is deemed to have been responsible for the theft, so you could be left out of pocket as well as without a car."

Anyone with information about today's car thefts should call the police on 101, or the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
