The 29-year-old man and 19-year-old woman were on the number one National Express bus, heading away from Dudley at around 9.25pm, yesterday, when they were involved in an altercation with a teenage boy as the bus was travelling along Burton Road.

During the dispute, the man was stabbed several times to his back and chest and the woman was punched to the face, suffering eye injuries.

Officers were called to the scene and arrested a 14-year-old boy on suspicion of attempted murder, just minutes after the teen was seen getting into a nearby vehicle.

Detective Sergeant Phil Pullinger said: "Thankfully, the man's stab wounds are not life threatening and he remains in hospital in a stable condition where he is expected to make a full recovery. The woman injured in the disorder required stitches under her eye and has since been discharged.

"We would like to reassure people a suspect was swiftly arrested at the scene. He remains in police custody where he is currently helping us with our inquiries.

"We have spoken to some of the passengers on the bus and we will be examining CCTV footage, however we are keen to hear from any passengers or passers-by on the street - who may have witnessed the disorder but left before our arrival ? and I would urge them to call us."

Anyone with information is asked to call police on 101, or the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
