The driver of a Hyundai i30, a man in his 50s, is believed to have suffered a health scare at the wheel which made him lose control of his car in Red House Lane, Aldridge.

The vehicle smashed into the back of the Walsall Council van which was parked at the side of the road, ending up on the pavement where it clipped a garden wall.

The man was taken to Walsall Manor Hospital after the crash just before 11am this morning.

Steve Palmer, watch commander at Aldridge Fire Station, said: "The gentleman was driving along the road and had some kind of health issue which caused him to lose control of his car and he has gone into the back of the van at speed.

"Fortunately the chap who the van belonged to had just that minute left the back of the van and started work at the property. Thirty seconds earlier he had been collecting tools from the back of the van."
