The driver diverted the No 1 Dudley to Tettenhall service to Wolverhampton's Bilston Street police station amid concern for the 28-year-old man who collapsed on board.

A fellow passenger had told the driver that the man was lying on the floor at the rear of the lower level of the bus. The driver apparently tried to rouse him and headed for the the nearest police station when unable to do so.

He went to reception where he reported that he was concerned about the condition of the passenger, who appeared to have been drinking. He then allegedly waited in the foyer for an officer until 20 minutes later when a woman passenger reportedly ran inside.

A witness said: "She was shouting 'help, help, he's not breathing.' The person behind the reception desk counter told the driver to ring the ambulance which he did on his own mobile."

Paramedics tried to resuscitate the young man but he was certified dead at the scene. The exact time of death is not known and it remains unclear if the man was still alive when the bus pulled up outside the police station shortly before 6.30pm on Friday.

The bus remained under police guard for several hours and has now been taken out of service until officers check film from CCTV cameras on board.

Chief Inspector Ian Green, from West Midlands Police, said: "Officers at Bilston Street police station initially received a report from a bus driver concerned for a man he believed was drunk on his bus. While waiting for police to attend the man took a turn for the worse and the driver contacted officers again who advised him to call an ambulance.

"Paramedics attended and the 28-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene. An initial police investigation has found there were no suspicious circumstances leading to his death." The matter will be referred to the IPCC.
