Officers from the British Transport Police and West Midlands Police attended the scene at around 1pm after reports a body had been found on an embankment next to the tracks on Hydes Road.

A British Transport Police spokesman said: "Officers discovered the body of an as-yet-unidentified person lying an embankment next to the tracks, which are on a disused line on which trains no longer run.

"Enquiries are ongoing to establish the person's identity and the full circumstances which led to the body being found at the location."

Mathew Whitehouse, who lives in Wednesbury, said: "I was on the bus coming back from the shops when I saw the police cars and the bus was diverted.

"I got off and it was quite obvious what was going on - there were loads of police cars as well as a private ambulance and a CSI van so my first thought was that they had found a body."
