Officers also revealed today that other motorists drove round him as he lay injured in Dudley Road East, Tividale.

Officers are searching for a silver car, possibly a Ford Fiesta, which they believe may have been involved.

Mr Yale was stuck in the early hours of Sunday. He had just stepped off the number 87 bus and was making his way home from work at a local hotel.

Detectives were originally considering the possibility that he had been assaulted.

But now they say as he crossed the road, he was hit by a silver coloured car which failed to stop shortly after midnight.

An off-duty police officer came to his aid and he was taken to Dudley's Russells Hall Hospital.

He has suffered multiple facial fractures and further extensive bruising to his body.

Mr Yale today remains in hospital in a stable but serious condition.

Detective Sergeant Phil Pullinger, from Sandwell CID, said: "Initially we were unsure how the young man came about his injuries, but we have scanned CCTV at the location and established that he was struck by a silver coloured car, possibly a Ford Fiesta.

"Following the collision a number of cars drove around him as he lay on the floor, so I am sure that someone will have seen what happened.

"The car involved could possibly have some damage to the front driver's side, so I would urge anyone with information to get in touch with me on 101."

Mr Yale's family have issued a picture of his injuries in a bid to appeal for information over the accident.
