School sports day postponed as travellers move onto Wolverhampton playing fields

A convoy of travellers has moved on to fields in a city – and is believed to have caused a school sports day to be postponed.

Elston Hall Primary School, in Wolverhampton, called off its sports day for its key stage two and early years pupils, which were due to take place yesterday and today.

The postponement is believed to be due to a group of travellers who turned up on land off Bee Lane, in Fordhouses, next to the school.

The convoy of around 40 vehicles is believed to have moved from land in Fowlers Park, Park Village – where a trail of rubbish has been left behind.

Wolverhampton City Council had ordered the group to move on by the beginning of this week.

Local councillor Ian Angus said he received calls from residents who were watching the travelling group move onto the Bee Lane site.

He said: "We think it is the same group that have been on a car park by the new KFC and more recently at Fowlers Park.

"It is a much-loved and much-used park. Myself and Councillor Daniel Warren went straight down there to reassure people that we are looking into moving them on." Councillor Warren said he had been told the sports days have been postponed because of the travellers being on the field. "It is very disappointing for the children," he added.

The school confirmed that the sports days had been postponed but refused to make any further comment.

A message on its website said: "Due to the problems with Bee Lane field, we are disappointed to have to postpone Key Stage 2 Sports Day and Early Years Foundation Stage."

One parent of a child at the school today said: "It's a shame really. The children turned up at school looking forward to sports day today and it has been postponed."
