In Wombourne drivers were forced to tackle three feet of water as the rain and snow combined to create a mini flood.

Gilbert Lane, just off the A449 by the Red Lion Pub, was covered in water.

A car just makes it through flood water in Gilbert Lane, Wombourne, with many drivers choosing to turn around instead

Express & Star photographer John Sambrooks snapped the wet scene and said: "The cars looked like submarines when they tried to go through it. Most of the drivers were sensible enough to turn away but the lorries could just about get through."

Commuters were advised to take care with Wolverhampton train station getting a sprinkling on its platforms and the snow exacerbated issues with flooding on the railway line between Hagley and Stourbridge Junction.

Train operator London Midland advised there would be delays of around 10 minutes between the two stations as train drivers reported 'minor flooding' on the line.

And Wolverhampton Wanderers posted pictures of the club's training ground pitches covered in snow, as well as snowflakes falling at Molineux.

However the snow is expected to turn to rain this afternoon, meaning rush hour chaos should be avoided.

Wolverhampton City Council said it sent its gritters out last night on the city's main highways, but was not planning to react to this morning's snow with rain forecast for later.
