Widower Mr Edwards, who went by his middle name Clive, was 88 and lived in St John's Close. He died in hospital on Friday, after being hit by a Ford Mondeo at 5.50am in High Street, Walsall Wood.

An inquest in Smethwick yesterday heard that he died from spinal injuries.

Coroner's officer Russell Williams told the hearing that Mr Edwards, who was identified by his son Barry, had been crossing the road on his way home from getting his morning paper from Costcutter.

Black Country Senior Coroner Robin Balmain adjourned the hearing to await the result of police inquiries.
