Bus company is prosecuted over death of worker at Walsall depot
A bus company is being prosecuted for failing to ensure the safety of workers after a mechanic died when he was crushed between two vehicles at a Walsall depot.
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has launched court proceedings against West Midlands Travel Ltd. Lee Baker suffered brain damage following an accident at the National Express West Midlands garage in Carl Street, in October 2011.
He died in hospital four months later. The firm is accused of three counts of contravening a health and safety regulation. The allegations relate to failing to make a suitable assessment of health and safety risks which employees were exposed to, inadequate supervision and giving relevant information about the movement of vehicles.
National Express West Midlands is the trading name of West Midlands Travel Ltd.
The case has been listed for Walsall Magistrates Court on January 27 and no pleas have been entered at this stage.
An inquest heard how 24 year-old Mr Baker, of Churchill Road, Walsall, was attempting to push a double-deck bus when it rolled forward and crushed him against another.
An inquest jury ruled that Mr Baker's death was accidental.
