Linda Evans, from Bilston, has created the poppies for the annual appeal – the fourth year running she has made the effort.

Mrs Evans, a mother of three from Owen Road, said her knitting began when her aunt Kath Guest, a retired New Cross Hospital worker, accidentally tore a paper poppy and Linda repaired it.

With that as inspiration, the idea blossomed into a popular fundraiser. Former Sainsbury's worker Mrs Evans says this year she will again be selling the wool poppies for £1 each.

They will be available in the Eye Openers opticians on Bilston High Street and the Goodyear Pavilion.

Mrs Evans said she also felt inspired to help the appeal because her son Simon, aged 40, worked with the RAF Red Arrows display team planning routes and handling air traffic for seven years, after reaching the rank of Corporal. She said: "I've had a bit of help this year because a friend has knitted a few for me, but it's been a bit like a production line.

"It started as a silly thing repairing a paper button for my auntie, but it's grown and grown."

Last year's funds, which totalled £2,827, were given to the Royal British Legion at Bilston Cenotaph. Mrs Evans, who also does voluntary work at old peoples' homes, said each poppy took around 20 minutes to create.
