Midlands fire crews called to crashes and car blaze

Firefighters were called to two crashes and a car fire in the Black Country.

Crews from West Bromwich and Wednesbury attended a crash between a Ford Ka and a Nissan Terrano in Walsall Road, West Bromwich at 1.30am this morning.

Crew commander Gary Melville from West Bromwich fire station, said: "Two vehicles had crashed almost head on. One driver had absconded from the scene and the other driver sustained minor injuries to the chest and legs."

The male driver of the Nissan, aged in his 40s, was given a precautionary check at the scene.

At 10pm last night crews from Bloxwich and Walsall attended a crash between a Mercedes and a Nissan Micra at the junction of Stafford Road and Turnberry Road.

The Mercedes car hit a traffic light control box which caused the lights to stop working. The female driver, aged in her 60s, was treated for shock. The driver of the Micra was not injured.

Watch commander Tim Middleton said crews made the vehicles safe.

Meanwhile, in Smethwick, firefighters were called to a car fire in Lodge Road at 10.15pm last night.

The car, a Vauxhall Astra which had been parked on the road was badly damaged in the fire which is being treated as suspicious.
