The power supply was lost at Bushbury Crematorium, in Wolverhampton, when the filtration units failed causing water to pour from boilers onto the fuse board. One funeral had to be postponed amid the disruption.

Services scheduled to be held yesterday and Tuesday were hastily moved as the cremators were out of action.

Some funerals had to be held as far away as Telford while others went to Streetly, in Walsall, while the site was repaired after the incident.

It happened at about 11.30am, just after the 11.15am service had finished. Another funeral due at midday had to be moved to Gornal Wood, in Dudley.

Five services due to take place at Bushbury on Tuesday afternoon were relocated to Gornal Wood and Sandwell, while a sixth was postponed to another date. The 11 services due yesterday were moved to Sandwell, Telford, Gornal Wood and Streetly.

Deputy Tory opposition leader Councillor Barry Findlay said: "We had some great support from neighbouring authorities and the staff at Bushbury did an absolutely brilliant job." Services were running as normal today.
