The legendary football boss will bow out after 26 years at Old Trafford for the club's final match of the season against West Bromwich Albion on May 19. Everton manager David Moyes was this afternoon confirmed as Ferguson's successor.

But supporters were left reeling today after websites were selling tickets priced between £120 and £2,500.

On Viagogo, an official online market place for supporters, tickets for a seat in the East Stand Lower were selling for £120.?But a top-priced seat in the Smethwick End was costing up to £2,500, plus fees, handling and VAT of £452. Meanwhile, on the 1st 4 Football Tickets website, a single ticket was today selling for £902.50 plus a £332.50 service fee and between £10 and £25 delivery.

West Bromwich Albion supporters' club chairman John Homer said he was astonished to hear the ticket prices. "I have heard tickets for the final game at Old Trafford are going for similar prices," he said.

"I only hope the Albion fans will keep hold of their own seats and not sell them to United. Segregation is important in the game these days. It will be such a historic occasion, a huge moment in the history of the game."

A spokesman for West Bromwich Albion said: "Viagogo is a the official ticket market place for the vast majority of Barclay's Premier League clubs.

"Up to 40 West Bromwich Albion season ticket holders per match have sold their seats on Viagogo this season – and the Manchester United game is no exception. It is at season ticket holders' discretion how much they sell their seats for."

One of Ferguson's successor's first tasks will be to persuade unsettled striker Wayne Rooney to stay at the club.
