Fire crews were called to the home of four-year-old George Downs and his brother Samuel, three, to extinguish a blaze in the garden of the house in Parkfields, Wolverhampton. Their mother, Sarah Downs, had to run from the kitchen with saucepans full of water to put the fire out.

But she was unable to save the equipment, which was damaged beyond repair.

Miss Downs, 25, of Rooker Crescent, said: "It was a present for Samuel for his second birthday from his grandparents, and George has said he's going to ask Santa for a new one for Christmas."

Miss Downs was alerted to the lantern by a neighbour who saw it land at 5pm on Monday.

"The firefighters said it was lucky it didn't spread to the trees nearby," she added.
