A fire caused damage to a ground floor classroom at a Wolverhampton school today.

Fire crews were called out to Our Lady & St Chad Catholic Sports College in Fallings Park at around 7.10am.

The fire was confined to the classroom which suffered only minor damage.

But the blaze caused heavy smoke logging to the rest of the school building.

Bosses at the school, which has around 831 pupils aged 11 to 18, said the alarm was raised after staff spotted smoke coming from a light fitment in a temporary classroom shortly after 7am today.

Acting head teacher Toni Ellis said by 8.10am, the school was given the all-clear and pupils and staff were allowed in.

It is not yet known what caused the fire but investigations are ongoing.
