A woman appeared in court today charged with the attempted murder of a baby found dumped among rubbish in a block of flats in Wolverhampton.

The woman spoke through an interpreter to confirm her name, age and address at the city's magistrates court. She was flanked by three security guards during the proceedings and cried as the attempted murder charge was read to her.

Prosecutor Mrs Kelly Crowe said that the child, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was found in a bin in Weston Court, Boscobel Crescent, Whitmore Reans, on Saturday night.

The baby girl remains critical in hospital.

On behalf of the defendant, solicitor Mr Mandeep Bassi applied for his client to be released on bail.

But it was refused by District Judge Michael Wheeler.

The defendant, from Wolverhampton, was remanded in custody to appear at Wolverhampton Crown Court next Thursday. She did not enter or indicate a plea.

A 32-year-old man arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender has been released pending further inquiries.

A large number of people were in court to hear details of the case. One woman shouted as the defendant was being led away.
