A new long-stay car park is to be created and park and ride scheme launched under £200,000 plans revealed for Willenhall.

Walsall Council has agreed action to ease parking around The Square shopping precinct in New Invention as part of a package of improvements.

Land at the rear of the shops will be resurfaced to create the car park with designated bays, improved security and better lighting.

Restricted parking of between two and three hours will be introduced at the front of the precinct to stop drivers clogging up the area.

The aim of the park-and-ride is to encourage people to take advantage of public transport with buses between Walsall, Cannock, Willenhall, Bloxwich and Wolverhampton.

It is also hoped more commuters will take advantage of the X31 bus amid fears over its long-term future. The improvements have been agreed by the council with the intention of being in place by January.

Willenhall councillor Ian Shires has been leading the campaign for work and welcomed the funding for the car park.
