A man appeared in court today charged with the murder of a university student in Tipton – as police confirmed she died from asphyxiation.

Daniel Jones, of Grace Road, Tipton, appeared before magistrates in Warley charged with the murder of Da In Lee.

The 26-year-old University of Wolverhampton student spoke only to confirm his details. He wore glasses and was wearing a blue-and-white striped shirt and black trousers in the dock.

He was remanded into custody at the hearing, which lasted just minutes. His defence made no application for bail.

The body of Ms Lee aged 22, a Korean national was found on Monday evening in a flat on Grace Road.

The court appearance comes on the same day police revealed the results of a post mortem investigation into the cause of her death.

Police spokesman Catherine Hickman said: "Early indications following a post mortem indicated she died as a result of asphyxiation. However further tests are due to take place."

Officers have meanwhile confirmed Ms Lee was an Aston University student studying international relations and sociology.

Jones was arrested at a railway station in Bristol on suspicion of murder and brought back to the West Midlands for questioning.
