A man has died after he was knocked down by a bus in West Bromwich.

The man, who has been named locally as Alan Griffin, was airlifted to hospital after the crash on Walsall Road in Stone Cross yesterday afternoon.

Mr Griffin, aged 53, was just yards from the home he shares with his wife Linda, in Jayne Close, when the accident happened.

Neighbours believe he may have been returning home from work at the laundry business Sunlight Service Group in Wednesbury when he was hit by the Black Country Connection bus which was on its way to West Bromwich.

Walsall Road was closed from Stone Cross island to Beaconview Road immediately after the crash, which happened at around 1.35pm near to the Texaco petrol station, to allow the air ambulance to land.

The Walsall-bound stretch re-opened at around 2.10pm, but the West Bromwich-bound part of the road remained closed until late afternoon.
