Work to widen a major road in South Staffordshire ahead of the opening of a controversial £180 million new "superprison" is set to be moved further away from homes following complaints – but by just two feet.

The compromise by Staffordshire County Council over the remodelling of the A460 Cannock Road with its junction of New Road in Featherstone was today criticised as not going far enough.

The new jail, called Featherstone 2, is being built next to the existing Featherstone Prison and Brinsford Young Offenders Institution.

It is expected to bring almost 1,400 extra journeys during rush hours when it opens next April.

Work on a new filter lane was due to start by last month but has been put on hold amid complaints from residents. The latest council proposal still needs to be signed off by the jail's developer Kier.
