Dwayne Walker today admitted killing David Daly because he had sold him a system which was not as high-spec as he had wanted.
Detectives said today Walker strangled his victim with a tea towel before hacking his body into a dozen pieces, dumping the head in a drain.
He threw the rest of the remains into the Staffordshire and Worcestershire Canal in Wolverhampton after attempts to burn them in his garden failed because they would not light.
Walker of Eastfields Grove, Wednesfield, today admitted murder at Wolverhampton Crown Court.
Mr Daly, an unemployed DJ who grew up in Kings Hill but lived in Park Village, Wolverhampton, went missing on December 8 2007 after going out to the shops. He was 31.
It was not until the following March police launched a murder inquiry when a pedestrian spotted a torso floating in the water alongside Cannock Road.
Walker, 28, was questioned after it emerged he had used Mr Daly's Sim card in the hours after his death. But detective chief inspector Richard Baker said Walker was so thorough cleaning the house and garden that though officers suspected him straight away there was no evidence to be found.
The downstairs had been completely redecorated, a garden shed destroyed, patio slabs removed and a layer of top soil dug up in a bid to destroy any DNA remains.
Jenny Miah, who was living with Walker at the time, admitted perverting the course of justice after she helped with the redecoration. The 27-year-old will be sentenced on March 22.
