The Little Civic in North Street closes on Sunday.

Rumours of the news had circulated among musicians who regularly play at the venue, which has now been confirmed by Wolverhampton City Council.

The council took over the building 10 years ago when it became the Little Civic.

It opened to provide a box office facility, while the Civic Hall underwent renovation work.

Problems with disabled access have been cited as the reason for the move.

The venue is well-known for helping to launch the careers of many well-known bands, including Coldplay, Kaiser Chiefs and Arctic Monkeys.

Sarah Campbell, Wolverhampton City Council's chief cultural services officer, said: "We have known that the lease on the Little Civic building would be expiring for a long time, and have been actively exploring potential sites where we could relocate the venue for more than a year.

City council spokesman Tim Clark added that the council is in negotiations with other venues so could not reveal the new location.

Sunday's gig will be headlined by Mark Morriss of The Bluetones.
