Michael Ricketts and Troy Deeney had both clipped the woodwork in the first half and in-form Alex Nicholls saw his close range effort saved by Cheltenham keeper Scott Brown.

But the Saddlers were also indeted to their goalkeeper Clayton Ince for a string of fine saves, the best coming as he tipped John Payne's 25-yard effort round the post in the first half.

In the dying seconds, manger Jimmy Mullen handed a debut to teenage striker Will Grigg.

The Saddlers, without injured skipper Stephen Hughes and defender Stephen Roberts, were under pressure in the first half with Ince making several fine saves, but had the better chances, as Ricketts hit the top of the bar and Deeney the outside of the post.
