The fire started at around 8.30pm in buildings at the back of the original school in the latest attack on the site. A total of eight fire crews and up to 40 firefighters turned out to the scene and had to use a hydraulic platform to put out 20ft flames. No-one was inside the building at the time but firefighters reported seeing youngsters close to the scene on arrival and police are investigating.

The damage has left parts of the building, some of which dates back to the 1920s, unstable and the council is now being urged to demolish it sooner rather than later.

Watch commander Adrian Jones, who was at the scene last night, said: "There are parts of the building which are unsafe and we will be talking to the owner about that."nextpage
