Flash mob chefs step out for cafes in Wolverhampton

A city centre street was rocking when a quartet of chefs claimed the pavements to perform a right song and dance.

Flash mobs took place outside Harry's Cafe in Queen Street and further up the road, in front of Simply Eat. Both businesses are taking part in Britain's Best Cafe competition.

The dancing chefs performed to Starship's 1980s hit We Built This City, prompting passers-by to stop, sing and clap along. Ellie Baker, from Dudley, said: "It's certainly brightened up my day's shopping." Wolverhampton student Marie Heller described the performances as 'really cool'.

Staff from the branches enjoyed a break from their usual duties by stepping outside to watch and join in. The competition is being run by SIG Roofing and is supported by the company's branches in Dudley, Birmingham and Telford.

Dudley manager Peter Goodson said: "Roofing contractors love their local cafes, so we're in this to support our customers and also the cafes. We're hoping it will be a business in our area that wins the top prize. A promotion like this reminds everyone how important our customers are to us, and how much they rely on their favourite cafes for a good cuppa, a great British Breakfast or a tasty lunch."

Thousands of people across the UK have so far voted in the national competition which will find winners in each region. Voting closes later this month and currently the three West Midlands cafes with the most votes are Gossips in Birmingham, The Pork House in Rowley Regis, and Piccolos in Bewdley.

Fourteen regional winners will be chosen, with the cafe owners and a guest invited to a celebratory lunch in London next month.

A national winner will receive a trip for two to New York for four nights, including a meal at Ellen's Stardust Diner, famous for its retro theme and singing waiting staff. Voting closes at midnight on October 28.
