For many of us Star Wars was the highlight of Christmas as the record-breaking seventh instalment The Force Awakens hit the cinema screens.

But one Walsall man has taken his love for the franchise a step further by collecting his favourite Star Wars themed Lego sets.

From the Millennium Falcon to Jabba the Hut's Palace, Matt Hook, aged 47, from Pelsall, already has quite a fearsome collection and it's expanding month on month as he and his 12-year-old son Thomas share the passion for the hobby.

Describing collecting Lego as an 'addiction', Matt said of his Star Wars collection: "I have always been a big Star Wars fan and my son has got into it as he's got older and with the new film out. my collection is getting bigger by the month.

"It's like an addiction, that's what I can compare it to.

"The Millennium Falcon is my favourite. It's been remodelled quite a lot and there's lots of pieces to it, that's what makes it so appealing to me.

"Another one I have got that is one of my favourites is Jabba's Palace from Return of the Jedi. That's great because of the characters in it and that they were unique to that set, you couldn't buy them anywhere else."

On top of this, Matt also owns the famous Ewok Village set and a huge AT-AT.

But Matt's Lego isn't all Star Wars. He and Thomas collect all sorts and have even founded a business venture out of it by buying and selling.

He said: "I actually buy and sell Lego as well as collecting it. It's not just Star Wars either me and my son collect all sorts.

"We have a bit of a street scene going on at the moment including a cinema, a pet store and a restaurant – they're all just sets that Lego have brought out.

"I'm a big kid and I'm still into Scooby Doo so I have started to collect that. Jurassic World as well."

Lego may be seen as a 'boys' hobby but that doesn't stop Matt's wife getting involved.

He said: "It's mainly just me and my son but my wife buys things she likes.

"She bought a Lego chess set the other day just because she liked the look of it, she's never played in her life! My wife is big on the Big Bang Theory so she bought herself that as well. It's only my daughter who's not into it."

Asked about the appeal of Lego and his collection as a whole, Matt added: "Everybody has still got a kid inside them, that's what it boils down to.

"Some people buy the sets and don't even open them because that's where the value is. Lego only do a certain amount of models and then they will discontinue them.

"Obviously I built a lot as a kid but its mainly been these last four years that I have got back into it.

"I have always collected since I was little and was interested in Lego and building. My son likes to play with his Lego, taking it apart and rebuilding it but I'm different with mine.

"Once it's made I like to put in a model case or out on display."

But despite his childhood and these past four years of collecting, Matt insists it is just a hobby and that he hasn't got a price on his vast collection. He said: "I don't really know how much my collection is worth because I don't see it like that.

"Some of the sets I paid £200 or £150 for. Some of the buildings I've got for example can be anything up to £140.

"If I started counting the sets then it probably is up into the thousands but I don't like to look at it like that.

"It's just what I like to do, I save up for sets and if I can afford it I buy it."
