They had grown up with Harry Potter – and early today there were tears as hundreds of fans bade a sad farewell to their hero. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part Two was shown at a series of special previews across the Midlands.

It meant a bitter-sweet experience for fans excited about watching the final film but upset about the prospect of saying goodbye to characters they have grown to love.

The opening of the final film, made 10 years after the first, was marked last night with a marathon double bill at the Showcase cinema in Castle Gate, Dudley.

It was 2.15am this morning by the time the Deathly Hallows Part One and Two had played.

And at the end there was a round of applause, with many of those watching sobbing with emotion. Sarah Wood, a nursery nurse from Tipton, had a tattoo of the Deathly Hallows symbol on her hand when the previous movie came out.

She said: "My nan and granddad both died around that time so it's a way of remembering them.

"I've been to all the midnight releases of the books – I've always had a lot of friends that like Harry Potter so we've grown up with it together."
