Stafford Borough Council planning chiefs have rubber stamped a change of use at 2A Staffordshire Place, where the university wants to move to, from a shop and restaurant to non-residential institution.

The university is looking to open the doors to its new premises this summer, with courses available from the next academic year.

Bosses were looking for a new home after leaving Stafford's Shire Hall.

The university left the Grade II listed building last year, with chiefs saying it wanted a more 'sustainable' premises.

Last month the university agreed to lease 2A Staffordshire Place off Staffordshire County Council.

It wants to use space to create a learning centre made up of two teaching rooms, social learning and meeting spaces.

The centre will offer information, advice and guidance on all aspects of higher education and taster courses alongside a fuller range of subjects from September.

Will Foster, the university's dean of Staffordshire, said: "We're very excited to be able to secure such a fantastic space right in the heart of Stafford.

"When the University made the decision to leave Shire Hall we were absolutely committed to finding a location within Stafford from which to operate and retain a strong presence.

"Staffordshire Place is a fantastic development and the new premises are better suited for the University's needs and most importantly, the delivery of courses."
