Applications for the Character Awards were open throughout January. Among the criteria they needed to demonstrate was how character building forms a core part of the ethos, culture and day-to-day running of the organisation and is actively encouraged among staff and pupils. This includes honesty, integrity and dignity as well as neighbourliness and community spirit.

Councillor Tim Crumpton, cabinet member for children's service, said:"It's fantastic that St James C of E Primary has managed to get through to the national finals for the development and improvement of character traits in its pupils.

"Congratulations to the staff and children. I look forward to hearing how they get on at the ceremony later this month."

Schools and organisations taking part have been judged on their demonstration of outstanding practice of character education during the 2013/14 academic year.
