A special service will be held in the presence of the Royal visitor on March 10.

Grand celebrations are set to begin at the cathedral next month to mark the completion of the five-year, £3.7m project to renovate and restore the East End of the building - the cathedral's Lady Chapel.

A major part of the work has been the removal, conservation and re-installation of the famous Herkenrode Glass.

The service will serve to re-dedicate the Lady Chapel as well as to celebrate the return of the stunning painted glass.

The Duke visited the cathedral when the project began, taking time to climb the scaffolding and view the work in progress. He has shown a continuing interest in the project.

The Very Revd Adrian Dorber, who is the Dean of Lichfield, said: "Completing this project is quite a milestone in the cathedral's history.

"We hope our efforts will mean that the East End of the cathedral is in good shape for another hundred years or so.

"We have kept faith with our predecessors by looking after a priceless treasure and we hand it on to the future with the best of our care and generosity."

The Herkenrode Glass is one of Europe's greatest artistic treasures and was installed in 1803.
