Wolverhampton lights up for Christmas

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas in Wolverhampton after the big festive lights switch-on.

More than 1,000 people made their way to the city centre's Market Square for a fun and fireworks-filled ceremony to mark the occasion.

Mayor, Councillor Michael Heap, was joined by pantomime star Joe Tracini, Wolves players Matt Doherty and Kevin McDonald, children's TV characters Ben and Holly and of course, Father Christmas to turn on the lights.

A huge TV screen and speaker system filled Market Square with seasonal songs and images, courtesy of Free Radio breakfast show hosts Kat and Nelly, who kept the crowd entertained before the lights were turned on.

Laura Fellows, aged 27, from Blakenhall, managed to get down the front with her two sons. She said: "It has been brilliant. We got here about at about 4pm.

"We come every year but this is our first time down the front."

Wolves' Dublin born right-back Doherty said: "It is a great privilege to be involved and judging by the turn out, this is something that really means a lot to people in Wolverhampton."

Pantomime star Joe Tracini, who is playing Buttons in this year's Cinderella show at the Grand Theatre, came to town for the event before heading back to London for rehearsals.

Councillor Heap said: "I couldn't be happier with how tonight has gone. Over a thousand people are here enjoying themselves."
