Ken Dodd 'MP' rumour is rubbished by Tories
Rumours that Ken Dodd will become the next Conservative candidate for Cannock were today rubbished by local Tories.
The 86-year-old comedian was said to be in the running to replace sitting MP Aidan Burley, who is to stand down following the row over a Nazi-themed stag party he organised in France.
But Cannock Chase Conservative Party chairman Paul Snape today said the rumour was 'rubbish'. He said: "This rumour was started by the Labour party around six weeks ago in the council chamber. It is just a joke because the selection process for a new candidate has not even started yet.
"The advert is still open so if Ken does want to apply then he can but he is not an approved candidate. Ken is 86 and he has performed at the Prince of Wales Theatre for the last 20 years and has always been well received.
"However I think I would prefer someone who is a bit younger and who has more of an affiliation with Cannock." Dodd was a supporter of the Tories under Margaret Thatcher and presented her with a tickling stick when she opened a tea shop in Liverpool's Wavertree constituency.
