The firm says it has doubled its cost-cutting target to £200 million a year by 2014 and its latest move comes after 1,200 redundancies were announced last year.

Today the company said the job cuts would affect staff in its head office and in support roles. It is not known whether any workers in Birmingham will be affected.

Around 900 people work at Direct Line House in Birmingham's Livery Street, one of 13 'centres of regional excellence'.

Direct Line's chief executive Paul Geddes said the firm had 'not made these proposed changes lightly'.
