Wolverhampton ranked top European city for manufacturing jobs
A Black Country city has been ranked top in Europe for creating manufacturing jobs – above industrial cities in Spain and Austria.
The list saw Wolverhampton take the top spot in the category which focuses on the creation of roles in manufacturing.
Wolverhampton was placed above places such as Graz in Austria and Spain's Catalonia region. The findings have been released this week by prestigious business magazine fDi.
According to experts who compiled the list, the city comes top in 'Western Europe for manufacturing job creation'.
The news has been welcomed by people and organisations across the city.
Ninder Johal, board member for Black Country LEP, said: "This is fantastic news, although it is not surprising.
"Wolverhampton has a strong heritage in manufacturing and Black Country LEP holds manufacturing at its core strategy.
"Not only that, we have automotive centres right on our doorstep as well as entrepreneurs and new start-ups flocking to the city. It's a great time to be involved in manufacturing in Wolverhampton."
Tweeting about the findings, Invest Black Country said: "Great to see @fDiMagazine rank the West Midlands Top Western European State for #manufacturing with #Wolverhampton ranked as Top City."
The University of Wolverhampton was also delighted with the news.
Speaking on Twitter, @wlv_uni said: "Thrilled to see Wolverhampton named as the top city in Europe for job creation in manufacturing!"
The news comes as the university is continuing to develop the former Springfield Brewery site as part of a £100 million transformation.
Earlier this month, it was announced that the university is to hold a special reception at the House of Lords next month in recognition of the impact of the development.
The site is already home to the West Midlands Construction University Technical College.
