Colony of bats is found at baths
A colony of 20 bats has been found roosting at Coseley baths, a discovery which could delay the demolition of the building.
Dudley Council commissioned an ecological survey of the condemned pool after several sightings of bats were reported.
Bosses have applied for a European Protect Species Licence from Natural England and must wait for the all clear to "capture, disturb or relocate" the bats before bulldozers can move in. Demolition is planned around the turn of the year.
In a report to the council's property department which is handling the site, consultant ecologist Susie Duke says a colony of around 20 bats is thought to be roosting behind metal cladding within the roofspace at the front of the building.
The report continues: "The proposed works will therefore need to be subject to licence by Natural England."
If Natural England is not satisfied with the council's licence application demolition will be delayed indefinitely.
