A vacant pub in West Bromwich has been bought up and looks set to reopen, specialising in serving Indian food.

Traders said the plans for The Stone Cross in Walsall Road would help to boost the local economy.

But concerns have been raised about parking with more people driving there for food instead of just going to drink. The pub was due to go to auction through Birmingham-based Bigwood earlier this month. But the company has confirmed the half-acre site was "sold prior to auction for an undisclosed price".

A statement from the company reveals that the new owners, whose identity has not been disclosed, will now refurbish the pub before reopening.

Director Ian Tudor said: "It will continue in its current use as a pub, specialising in Indian food."

Traders in the area welcomed the decision to re-open the landmark venue, which is situated on a traffic island.

Mike Brookes, of Osborne Butchers, said: "It's been empty for a while, I can't remember the last time it was open.

"It's going to be a lot better for the area if it's open again.

"There are too many empty pubs and shops."

Councillor Ray Nock, who represents the area for the Conservatives, said: "I am pleased that it has been bought and will be brought back into use.

"I do have concerns about the parking there.

"That's a very busy road and I would be seeking some reassurances about how the new owners will make sure there is enough space for everyone."

The pub has been on the site since 1804.

Records show that blacksmith Thomas Sheldon applied for the first licence and named the pub after a wayside cross that stood outside.

The pub was the last place in West Bromwich to hold traditional Maypole celebrations with the final event being recorded as taking place in 1915.

Pub chain Mitchells & Butler used to own the pub.
