Ward is eyeing a new role
Wolves' "play-anywhere" man Stephen Ward is setting his sights on becoming a specialist left-back as he prepares for the Premier League challenge.
Ward was recruited by manager Mick McCarthy as a striker in January, 2007, but then went on to feature as a left-sided midfield player for much of his second season at the club.
But the promotion winning campaign just completed featured a stand-out contribution from Ward at left-back – and it is that role which he now believes could hold the key to his future success.
"People would probably say I'm a left back now and it's been a long time since I played up front," he said.
"It was a bit of a strange one at first and I was a bit nervous, but I ended up really enjoying it.
"It was a case of being thrown in at the deep end the first time – the gaffer asked me to play there and while I was initially apprehensive after a couple of games I grew in confidence.
"It helped that we started the season so well and were playing some great football and were top of the league.
"I played a majority of the season there in a team which got promoted and like anyone, as long as you are playing then you are never going to complain about your position.
"I think in modern day football you have to be able to do a variety of jobs in different positions."
