Rangers look at former loan stars

Stafford are prepared to offer former loan stars Christian Millar and Tom Thorley the chance to rebuild their careers at Marston Road.

Millar finds himself without a club for the first time after he was released by League Two Macclesfield, while Thorley will be out of contract at Premier League Stoke when the Premier League season ends.

The 19-year-old could yet be offered a new deal, but that is not the case for wide man Millar - he must search for a new club.

He spent three months on loan at Marston Road last season, before being forced to return to Moss Rose at the end of his allowed loan period.

The teenager has already alerted clubs to his situation, including Rangers assistant boss Darren Read, who has relayed the message to manager Chris Brindley - away in the USA for a week on business.

The No 2 reckons that if the 19-year-old cannot get himself fixed up with a full-time club, Blue Square North football with a club he knows could be an attractive option.

Read said: "Christian did very well for us during his time here. We know what he can do, I obviously can't speak for the manager but I am sure he would be welcome to come back on trial at least.

"It's whether something can be worked out financially and we obviously have the current squad to sort out first. But he fits the profile of the sort of player we are looking for and is someone we already know.

"I certainly wouldn't rule it out."

Thorley is a player Rangers would certainly be interested in, he spent five months on loan at Marston Road last season in total.

But the player recently turned out for League Two Rotherham in a reserve game, indicating that there could be competition for his signature should he become available.

Read has not forgotten about his Potters team-mate and another former loan star in Jimmy Phillips either.

The assistant said: "Tom has obviously been at Rotherham, but his future is very much up in the air at the moment. We would definitely be interested in him if he was available to us, he made a difference to our season when he was here.

"But he will obviously want to join a full-time club, as they all will, but if that doesn't work out for him we are an option. Again, I can't second guess the manager, but he is a fan of the player.

"Jimmy is another we are keeping tabs on, he fits the bill of what we are looking for."
