People living in nearby Heronswood Road said they "were aware of police activity in the area" but were shocked at the discovery near to an area popular with children and dog-walkers.

It is not known how long the body had been in the woodland, which bounds Spennells Valley Road leading to the southern side of the town.

Dylan Evans, a spokesman for West Mercia Police, confirmed the body of a man had been found. He said: "Police are investigating the unexplained death of a man found dead in Kidderminster last night.

"The white man was found in woodland at about 6.50pm by local youths who contacted the police. The man, who has not yet been identified, was confirmed dead at the scene.

"Police are treating this as an unexplained death and a post mortem examination is expected to be carried out later today.

"The Worcestershire Coroner has been informed and police investigations are continuing to discover the man's identity."

Meanwhile people living in the area were shocked by the discovery. One resident of Heronswood Road, who did not want to be named, said: "It is worrying to think some-one's body can be found in a place like this."
