Sandwell Hospital's fundraising aim

A new "Celebration of Life" fundraising group has been set up at a Black Country hospital.

The group, at Sandwell Hospital, follows a successful fundraising campaign.

It was organised in memory of Sue Dakin who died of cancer in 2007.

Husband Brian, alias Black Country poet Billy Spake Mon, and friend Lozz Hipkiss organised the 2008 Celebration of Life Festival.

They raised £14,000 for the hospital breast unit and, after talking to the hospital, it was decided it should fund a new Celebration of Life Group – made up of women aged 50 and under, receiving treatment for breast cancer.

A dedicated room will be created where women and partners can meet to offer each other support. Cash will also be used for personal items and day trips.

Sue, or Susie as she was known to friends, was a patient at Sandwell, City Road and the Queen Elizabeth Hospital for 12 years.

Brian, aged 57, of Oldbury, said: "Susie's philosophy was always to counter a negative with a positive. Susie raised thousands while she was being treated and was an example to us all."

Lozz and "Billy" will fundraise from Dudley Golf Club, Turners Hill, Rowley Regis, where their shows take place.

The first event for the Celebration Of Life fund 2009 is on May 9 and features artists such as The Laners, Phil and Emmi, Louise Stokes, Nothing To Prove alongside Billy and Lozz.

Tickets will be £7.50 including a supper of faggots and peas. Profits go to the fund.

Other events are booked throughout the year and can be found on the www blackcountrypodcasting.com and Sandwell Hospital websites.

Tickets can be bought by calling Lozz on 01384 231013 or by emailing lozz@roostersstudio.com
