Scottish defender Collins had two years left on his existing deal, but the club have taken steps to protect their investment in the 24-year-old.

Collins, who cost £150,000 when he arrived from the Stadium of Light in 2006-07, believes he and his team-mates can make futher strides under boss Mick McCarthy.

He said: "Wolves is a club going places and hopefully I can play a real part in that.

"It's a good time to be at the club. We've got a good manager and with the way he's shaping the team, we're not even close to our potential yet.

"We all want to be here when big things happen. With all the strides the club have taken over the last two years, I'm sure we're not too far away from that."

Collins was one of several players criticised by supporters last season but believes his best is yet to come.

He said: "There's more to come from myself as well, definitely. I don't want to rest on my laurels, I want to improve all the time.

"There's always someone trying to take your place. So I'll be working even harder next season."

The influence of McCarthy is crucial to Wolves chances, according to Collins.

He said: "It was the same manager for the majority of the time at Sunderland and it was a similar situation with young players coming into the club.

"The team spirit is probably even better here. Wolves have been a bit of a sleeping giant but they're going places now.

"Everyone feels it's taking off again."

On the Gray deal, chief executive Jez Moxey said: "We're talking to Michael about the possibility of an extension to his contract.

"He's out of contract but he's in training and both parties appear to be keen to a deal."
