The Mayor of Dudley has been urged to ditch a balloon launch to mark this year's St George's Day celebrations in Dudley – in case they disturb birds.

The event in the town centre was due to be kicked off with the release of hundreds of red and white balloons.

But a letter submitted to North Dudley Area Committee has called on the release to be ditched because of the risk to wildlife and the litter caused when the balloons fall to ground.

There were concerns the streets would be left littered with hundreds of bits of plastic when the balloons burst and came down to earth.

Councillor Anne Millward said the council was to look into the matter and see if there was any alternative.

She indicated the council may consider using "environmentally friendly" balloons for the event in Vicar Street , Dudley, on April 26.

There were also fears hundreds of balloons could frighten or injure birds or flying overhead.
